Sore Losers or is the Electoral College Out of Date?

Under the Democratic system, every four years we have an election for a new president. There's a popular vote, the vote every citizen is entitled to; however, the determining vote for who will be our new president is the electoral college vote.

Democrats have suffered from this system twice in the past twenty years when George W. Bush in 2000 and more recently Donald Trump. Both lost the popular vote but came in clutch with the electoral vote. In addition to this, Kavanaugh was appointed to the Supreme Court by one of these men and will be serving for life, enraging many Democrats. In solutions, many have suggested to throw out the electoral college system entirely and elect the next presidents from now forward based off of popular vote. The reasoning behind it being that the majority of people should be heard. Every voice matters. (Read more...)

However, on the flip side, only 270 electoral votes are needed for a president to be elected; therefore, every vote matters. The potential candidates work their best to win over every state. If only the popular vote was taken into consideration, then only the bigger, more populated states would get the candidates attention.

Do you think that having no electoral college would be beneficial? Do you think that the Democrats would support this the popular vote if the electoral college hadn't failed them? What do you think is more important: individual power or equality between the states?

  1. I think having no electoral college would be catastrophic. I think we would see our election process move away from campaigning in many different states and towns across the country and listening to many different lifestyles and opinions into just campaigning in big cities and states like New York and California. I do not think this issue would be as important to the democrats if they didn’t lose twice in an election even when they won the popular vote. However their argument is still very valid, and has been debated for while it is just one which I disagree with.
